Over the past few months, the Indian equity market has behaved very differently from most global markets. While developed economies have struggled with slowing growth, higher yields, and geopolitical uncertainty, Indian equities have largely held their ground not through directional gains but through structured compression. Prices have rotated within a controlled range, volatility has increased, but structural damage has not occurred. This behaviour is typical of a late-cycle consolidation inside an ongoing primary uptrend.

The most important takeaway from recent price action is straightforward: Supply is being absorbed in large caps, while parts of the broader market still reflect prior supply expansion.

Institutional Liquidity Is Controlling Market Structure

A major structural shift visible on charts is the persistence of buying pressure on declines. Monthly SIP flows tell a story in themselves: flows stood above ₹19,000 crore in early 2024 and have since surged to above ₹31,000 crore monthly by early 2026; a rise of more than 60% in roughly two years. This is not a marginal shift. It represents a structural deepening of domestic participation that has fundamentally changed how the market absorbs selling pressure.

From late 2022 through 2023, 2024, and into the 2025–26 corrections, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have repeatedly absorbed selling pressure whenever Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) reduced exposure. Each risk-off phase has resulted in volatility but not trend breakdown. This behaviour is directly visible in price structure: declines terminate near long-term moving averages rather than cascading into lower lows. Price has been moving sideways rather than downward, a classic accumulation characteristic, and a pattern that is structurally distinct from distribution.

Index Structure: Large Caps Stabilising, Small Caps Diverging

Recent price behaviour across market segments shows a divergence that is more significant than the original index-level reading suggests and it cuts in a different direction than initially apparent.

Large-cap indices such as the Nifty and Sensex have recovered from recent corrections. Institutional capital gravitates toward liquidity and stability during periods of uncertainty, so buying pressure first emerges in large caps. This is predictable and consistent with how institutional allocation behaves at the end of a risk-off phase. The large-cap recovery is real and structurally supported.

Small caps tell a more sobering story. Scan data across the Nifty Smallcap 100 shows that 75% of constituents are currently trading below their 200-day moving average, a level of broad structural damage that goes well beyond index-level weakness. While 43 stocks have recovered above their 50 DMA, suggesting a short-term bounce is underway, only 22 of those are also above their 200 DMA and can be considered genuinely healthy. The remaining 21 are bouncing within a broken structure, they look constructive on a short-term measure but the long-term trend remains impaired.

This data reframes the small cap narrative. The February breadth improvement seen across sectors is better characterised as a relief rally within an ongoing downtrend rather than evidence of structural repair. For the small cap picture to genuinely turn constructive, the number of stocks above the 50 and 200 DMA needs to expand materially beyond the current 22. That is the single most important metric to monitor in the weeks ahead.


Breadth Expansion Confirms Internal Strength

Internal participation data offers some of the clearest evidence that the market's recent recovery is structural rather than superficial. On January 20, only 314 stocks were trading above their 50-day moving average: a deeply oversold environment reflecting weak participation across the market. By February 18, that number had expanded to 872 stocks.

This broad rise in participation shows the move is not being driven by a few heavyweight stocks alone, as activity has expanded across sectors, a behaviour typically associated with accumulation rather than a simple technical bounce. However, it must be interpreted with caution. With nearly 75% of Nifty Smallcap 100 stocks still below their 200 DMA, much of the improvement in the 50 DMA is occurring within structurally weak setups where prices are rebounding from oversold levels without repairing long term trend damage. The expansion therefore confirms a short term recovery in participation, but not yet a fully established structural uptrend, and the durability of the move will depend on improvement in long term breadth.


Sector Participation: From Contraction to Expansion

January marked a breadth trough, with most sectors languishing in the 15-20% range, a deeply washed-out condition. February reversed that structure dramatically, with most sectors recovering 45-55 percentage points and Plastic Products leading with a near-80pp swing. This is considerably more forceful than typical breadth recoveries and signals improving internal participation, though still consistent with an early phase recovery rather than a fully repaired market structure. The cyclical leadership: Auto and Plastics in particular carries a macro message: these sectors lead when market participants are pricing in an acceleration in domestic economic activity, suggesting the recovery has a fundamental underpinning beyond pure technicals.


Key Technical Level: The 200-Day Moving Average

The most critical observation over recent months has been the defence of the 200-day moving average. During the correction, the Nifty approached long-term support and immediately reversed. This is not a technical footnote; it is the most important single data point in the market's recent history.

What the 200 DMA defence confirms: the primary trend remains bullish, and the market is undergoing a momentum reset rather than a trend reversal. A decisive, sustained break below the 200 DMA would have changed market character entirely. It would have called into question the entire accumulation thesis and shifted the probability distribution toward a deeper correction. The failure to break confirms that buyers remain active underneath price at every meaningful test of support. Notably, the same 200 DMA defence does not apply to the small-cap universe, where 75% of stocks have already broken below that level  reinforcing that this is a two-speed market.

The index has repeatedly tested the 26,000 zone and has so far struggled to sustain above it. A brief breach was recorded on Union Budget day in early February, where event-driven volatility pushed the index to 26,350 intraday before a sharp pullback, a move that reflects budget-day noise rather than a clean technical breakout or rejection. Stripping out that event, the underlying structure remains a controlled compression: the index is holding above key support while energy builds beneath resistance. Such formations rarely resolve sideways indefinitely, and the internal evidence: breadth expansion, DII absorption, and cyclical sector leadership continues to point toward upward resolution as the higher-probability scenario once a clean, volume-confirmed breakout above 26,000 is established.

Breadth Structure: Selective Accumulation

Current breadth data reflects the split nature of the market. The advance-decline ratio for large and mid-caps sits around 0.66x weaker on the surface, but consistent with the early stages of a transition from risk-off to risk-on, where large-cap money moves first. The small-cap A/D ratio of approximately 3.43x appears strikingly positive but needs important context.

That 3.43x figure captures short-term daily advances during the current bounce, it is a momentum measure, not a structural one. It does not contradict the finding that 75% of Nifty Smallcap 100 stocks remain below their 200 DMA, because the two metrics are measuring different things over different timeframes. The A/D ratio tells you which direction stocks are moving today; the 200 DMA tells you whether the underlying trend is healthy. Right now, many small-cap stocks are moving up from deeply oversold levels while still sitting in broken long-term trend structures.

The large-cap market is currently waiting for confirmation. Three trigger conditions need to align for the next impulsive move to have conviction:

First, a sustained breakout above 26,000 accompanied by meaningful volume expansion, not an intraday spike as seen on budget day, but a multi-session close above resistance. Second, FII flows aligning with existing domestic buying pressure, confirming that foreign capital is returning rather than simply pausing its exit. Third, a material expansion in the number of Nifty Smallcap 100 stocks above their 200 DMA, moving well beyond the current 22%. Without this third condition, a large-cap breakout would be structurally narrow and at higher risk of failing.

If all three occur together, the move is unlikely to be gradual. Prolonged supply absorption during a compression phase typically results in an impulsive release when resistance clears. But the quality of that move, its breadth and durability depends on whether small caps repair their structural damage in parallel.


The large cap index has corrected through time, whereas the broader market has experienced both time and price correction. That distinction matters enormously for how one positions in it. A price correction depletes supply through forced liquidation; a time correction depletes it through patience and gradual absorption. The latter tends to produce cleaner, more durable bases and that is what the large-cap structure shows.

The small-cap story is different. There, the correction has been both through time and through price. 75% of stocks below the 200 DMA reflects genuine supply expansion that has not yet been fully absorbed. The February bounce is encouraging, but repair takes longer than a single month to confirm.

After a decade of stress, Indian banking has entered a structurally stronger phase, attracting decisive long-term foreign capital. A sharp clean-up reduced GNPA from 11.2% in 2018 to ~3% by 2025, while credit growth rebounded above 14%, driven by retail and MSME lending. Digital infrastructure (UPI, AA, OCEN) improved scalability and risk assessment. Major global deals (MUFG–Shriram, SMBC–Yes Bank, Emirates NBD–RBL, IHC–Sammaan) signal confidence in regulation and governance. With supportive macro fundamentals, prudent RBI oversight, stabilising margins, falling credit costs, improving credit growth, and still-conservative valuations, foreign investors see Indian banks entering a favourable multi-year cycle.

After over a decade of caution, global capital is knocking on the doors of India’s banks. This time, interest is not tentative. It’s decisive.

What we are witnessing today is arguably the strongest wave of foreign participation in Indian banking since the 2008–2010 period. But unlike earlier cycles when foreign money arrived chasing growth and exited at the first sign of stress, this wave feels different. It is arriving with patience, intent, and a longer horizon.

That change didn’t happen overnight. It reflects a broader shift in how global investors now perceive India’s financial system. For years, Indian banking was seen as cyclical and fragile, with high growth but high risk. Today, that perception has quietly flipped. India’s banks are increasingly viewed as stable, scalable, and institutionally mature.

The reason lies not in promises or policy speeches, but in what has already been done.

For much of the previous decade, Indian banking struggled under the weight of bad loans, weak underwriting, and balance sheets stretched by aggressive corporate lending. The consequences were visible. Asset quality deteriorated, capital had to be injected repeatedly, and confidence eroded. For foreign investors, this made Indian banks difficult to trust, let alone invest in.

Over the last several years, the system went through a painful but necessary clean-up. Gross non-performing assets, which stood at an alarming 11.2% in 2018, steadily declined to around 3.1% by 2025. This improvement wasn’t cosmetic. Banks were forced to recognise stress early, provision adequately, and tighten underwriting standards. In simple terms, problems were no longer postponed, they were addressed.

Crucially, this clean-up didn’t come at the cost of growth. Instead of freezing credit, banks changed the nature of lending.

As corporate-heavy balance sheets gave way to more diversified portfolios, retail and MSME loans emerged as the primary drivers of incremental credit growth. Today, overall credit growth has re-accelerated to over 14% year-on-year, but the risk profile looks far healthier than it did a decade ago. Smaller ticket sizes, broader borrower bases, and better data have made lending more resilient.

What enabled this shift was something India didn’t have in earlier cycles: a digital financial backbone.

The rapid rise of platforms like UPI, Account Aggregators, and the Open Credit Enablement Network quietly transformed how credit is assessed and delivered. Data availability improved. Turnaround times collapsed. Risk assessment became more precise. Lending that once took weeks could now happen in days, sometimes hours. This made growth not just faster, but scalable.

As banks became more efficient and predictable, confidence began to return. And with confidence came capital.

The Deals That Made Everyone Pay Attention

The confidence in India’s financial system isn’t limited to banks alone. It extends just as strongly to large, well-established NBFCs especially those sitting at the heart of India’s credit demand.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is set to acquire a 20% stake in Shriram Finance for about $4.4 billion, making it the largest foreign direct investment ever in India’s financial services sector. Deals of this size aren’t opportunistic. They’re long-term commitments. For MUFG, India offers what Japan no longer can: structural credit growth, rising consumption, and decades of runway. Shriram Finance, with its deep reach in vehicle finance and MSME lending, gives MUFG direct exposure to that growth.

The Middle East is telling a similar story.

Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Company (IHC) agreed to acquire around 41.2% stake in Sammaan Capital in a near $1 billion deal. Housing finance is a slow, steady business built on long-term demand, not quick cycles. IHC’s move signals conviction in India’s mortgage growth story and in the regulatory stability governing NBFCs.

When Emirates NBD agreed to acquire around 60% stake in RBL Bank through a $3 billion preferential issue, it marked a turning point. This wasn’t just another foreign investment, it was the first time a Middle Eastern bank took controlling ownership of an Indian private sector lender. Such decisions are not taken lightly. They require deep conviction in the regulatory environment, governance framework, and long-term profitability of the system.

For RBL Bank, the investment brought more than balance-sheet support. It enabled expansion, accelerated digital upgrades, and strengthened its competitive position in a sector where scale and capital efficiency increasingly matter. At a broader level, it reflected how India–UAE financial ties are evolving from transactional flows to long-term institutional partnerships.

Soon after, Japan made its own statement.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation’s $1.52 billion investment in Yes Bank India’s largest cross-border banking deal reinforced the same message. Japan’s domestic banking market is mature, low-growth, and constrained by demographics. To grow meaningfully, Japanese banks must look outward. Among emerging markets, India stands out for one reason: it combines growth with improving stability.

For Yes Bank, still rebuilding credibility after its 2020 restructuring, SMBC’s entry was more than capital. It was validation. It signalled that the recovery was not just visible, but believable to one of the world’s most conservative banking systems.

Together, these deals reveal something important. Foreign banks are not entering India to rescue stressed institutions. They are stepping in after the system has stabilised, when risks are better understood and earnings visibility has improved.

That confidence is also reinforced by the macro backdrop.

India remains the fastest-growing major economy, with GDP growth estimated around 7.2% in FY25. Inflation volatility has been relatively contained, and foreign exchange reserves of roughly USD 665 billion provide resilience against external shocks. For global investors, this reduces the probability of sudden disruptions, an essential consideration when deploying long-term capital.

Add to this India’s favourable demographics. A young, increasingly credit-seeking population creates a structural tailwind for retail banking. This isn’t a short-term demand spike. It’s a multi-decade opportunity.

But perhaps the most underappreciated contributor to this renewed interest is regulation.

Over the years, the Reserve Bank of India has built a reputation as a regulator that prioritises prudence over popularity. Its insistence on early stress recognition, adequate capital buffers, and governance discipline fundamentally changed how banks operate. For domestic players, this meant fewer shortcuts. For foreign investors, it meant something far more valuable: trust.

Trust that risks are identified early, not hidden.

With that foundation in place, attention naturally shifted to valuations and cycles.

One of the core reasons foreign institutional investors are once again paying close attention to Indian banks is the combination of where valuations are today and where the underlying banking cycle is headed. Banking is not inherently a linear business. It moves in phases. And FIIs typically allocate capital not when everything looks perfect, but when valuations are compressed and fundamentals are quietly beginning to improve.

This is exactly what Indian banking is today.

Despite a visible recovery in balance sheets and profitability, bank valuations remain conservative. The Nifty Bank index is currently trading close to its four-year low valuation levels, at around 2.2x price-to-book. Historically, high-quality private sector banks have traded at meaningfully higher multiples during favourable phases of the cycle. The present discount largely reflects past concerns of margin pressure from higher deposit costs, regulatory tightening, and a prolonged period of uncertainty around asset quality. Many of those headwinds, however, are now easing.

Public sector banks tell a similar story. The Nifty PSU Bank index trades at roughly 1.4x price-to-book, well below its historical peak of close to 2x. This is despite several years of balance-sheet clean-up, capital strengthening, and measurable improvements in governance and profitability. For global investors, this creates an asymmetric setup: downside risks appear increasingly contained, while upside remains meaningful if return ratios continue to improve.

But valuations alone are never enough. What truly attracts FIIs is when valuations align with a turning cycle.

Indian banking is entering such a phase. Net interest margins are stabilising after an extended period of pressure. Asset quality continues to improve, pulling credit costs lower. And credit growth has re-accelerated, supported by structural reforms rather than leverage or excess risk. When these forces come together, earnings upgrades and valuation re-rating often follow.

To understand why this matters, it helps to step back and recognise that banking operates through three overlapping cycles, each influencing profitability and risk in different ways. Long-term investors focus less on quarterly noise and more on where these cycles stand.

One is the net interest margin cycle. At its core, NIM represents the spread between what a bank earns on its loans and what it pays on its deposits. In India, most retail and MSME loans are linked to the External Benchmark Lending Rate, which moves closely with the RBI’s repo rate. When the RBI cuts rates, loan yields adjust quickly often within days or weeks. Deposit rates, however, reprice far more slowly, since fixed deposits adjust only upon maturity.

This mismatch creates short-term margin pressure. Over the past six quarters, Indian banks experienced precisely this phenomenon: loan yields fell faster than funding costs, compressing NIMs. Deposit competition intensified, pushing up costs further.

But margin cycles do not move in one direction indefinitely.

NIM expansion begins when deposit costs peak and start easing as high-cost deposits mature and are renewed at lower rates, while loan yields stabilize. That inflection point is now emerging. From around Q2 FY26, deposit repricing pressures have started to ease, even as loan yields have largely held steady. Markets tend to reward this phase early, well before margins fully recover.

The second cycle concerns asset quality and credit costs. This cycle is often misunderstood. Periods of tight liquidity or slower lending do not immediately create new NPAs, but they can mechanically worsen asset quality ratios. When loan books stop growing, existing NPAs form a larger proportion of total loans, even if no new stress is added.

For example, if a bank has ₹100 of loans and ₹3 of NPAs, its GNPA ratio is 3%. If the loan book shrinks to ₹95 due to run-off while NPAs remain unchanged, the GNPA ratio rises to 3.15%. On paper, asset quality looks worse, even though no new defaults occurred.

This dynamic played out in earlier phases. But the trend has now reversed.

From recent quarters onward, GNPA ratios for both banks and NBFCs have started declining meaningfully. System-level GNPA has fallen to around 2.6%, a 12-year low. As asset quality improves, credit costs fall. Lower provisioning and write-offs directly improve profitability and reduce earnings volatility. This is a powerful tailwind that often goes underappreciated until it is well entrenched.

The third and final cycle is credit growth.

In recent years, credit expansion was deliberately restrained amid high food inflation and elevated interest rates. But with inflation now at multi-year lows and the policy stance turning supportive, the RBI has begun enabling credit growth without compromising stability.

A key catalyst here has been the RBI’s decision to ease Liquidity Coverage Ratio run-off norms. Earlier, banks were required to assume high deposit withdrawal risks, forcing them to hold large quantities of low-yield government securities. Under the revised framework, run-off rates on stable and retail deposits were reduced, recognising India’s sticky CASA base.

This reform unlocks an estimated Rs 2.7–3.0 lakh crore of lending capacity, allowing banks to deploy funds into loans without raising deposits, leverage, or risk. Importantly, this is not credit loosening. Asset-quality norms and prudential standards remain unchanged. What has improved is balance-sheet efficiency.

When these three cycles margins, asset quality, and credit growth turn favourable together, banking profitability tends to improve in a durable way.

This is why, from a foreign investor’s perspective, Indian banks now offer a compelling mix: strong balance sheets, improving profitability metrics, and long-term structural growth in credit demand. Valuations have not fully priced in these improvements, and that gap is where FIIs typically step in.

So interest is not driven by short-term momentum. It is driven by a recognition that the worst is behind, the system is healthier, and the cycle is quietly turning in favour of banks and NBFCs alike.

The Quiet Comeback of Indian Banking and Why Foreign Investors Care

The year 2025 marked a turning point in global trade as the United States rolled out one of its most aggressive tariff measures in modern history.  Under this framework, India is subject to a 26% reciprocal tariff on its exports to the U.S., China faces the steepest rate – an initial 34% reciprocal tariff that, when combined with prior U.S. penalties (e.g., fentanyl-related duties), brings the effective U.S. levy on Chinese goods to about 54%​. President Trump even threatened an additional 50% on China, which would bring it to a staggering 104% total tariff on Chinese imports​. By comparison, tariffs on other major U.S. trade partners vary: for example, the European Union is set at 20%, Japan 24%, South Korea 25%, Vietnam 46%, Cambodia 49%, Bangladesh 37%, Thailand 36%, and Taiwan 32%​. Neighboring allies Canada and Mexico are exempt from these new reciprocal tariffs (their goods remain subject only to earlier targeted duties)​.

The United States is one of India’s largest export markets, so these tariffs carry significant implications across many Indian industries. Below, we examine the impact sector-by-sector, focusing on exports to the U.S., potential revenue/Earnings impacts, and how Indian firms and policymakers are responding.


The chemical industry is a cornerstone of India’s exports, from specialty chemicals to agro-chemicals and dyes. The U.S. is India’s largest chemicals customer, buying about $2.9 billion of Indian chemicals in 2023-24 (roughly 14% of India’s $20.4 billion chemical exports)​.

Shrimp Industry: Big Blow, Bigger Competitors:


India is the world’s second-largest exporter of seafood (shrimp in particular), and the U.S. is the biggest buyer of Indian shrimp. This sector now faces one of the harshest tariff shocks. As per information, the US has decided to impose an anti-dumping duty of 2.49%, countervailing duty of 5.77% and reciprocal tariff of 26% which will raise the tariff to a total of 34.26%. In contrast, India’s smaller competitor Ecuador faces only about a 13.78% duty on its shrimp exports to the U.S.​ This huge gap – Indian shrimp effectively carrying a ~20 percentage-point higher tax – severely undermines India’s price competitiveness in the U.S. market. For context, India supplied an estimated 35–40% of the shrimp consumed in the U.S. last year​.

While not directly subject to tariffs (which apply to goods, not services), India’s IT and software services sector is indirectly exposed to the U.S. trade war through its reliance on American clients. The United States accounts for roughly 50–60% of the revenue for leading Indian IT firms like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra​. These companies provide outsourcing, consulting, and software development services to virtually every U.S. industry – from banking to retail to manufacturing. If those client industries face higher costs or slowing growth due to tariffs, they are likely to tighten IT budgets.

The Indian pharmaceutical sector, a global powerhouse in generics supplying over 45% of U.S. prescriptions and generating $8.7–$13 billion in annual exports to the U.S., is facing heightened uncertainty due to potential tariff impositions. In early April 2025, Announcment  that pharmaceuticals, along with sectors like semiconductors and copper, were excluded from a round of “reciprocal” tariffs announced by the U.S. administration. These tariffs targeted imports from various countries, with rates like 26% on India,  The exemption provided temporary relief to Indian drugmakers, as it preserved their tariff-free access to the U.S. market, where generics currently face minimal duties. This was seen as a pragmatic move, given the U.S.’s dependence on India for affordable medicines and the potential for tariffs to spike drug prices for American consumers. Days after the exemption reports, statements from U.S. leadership, particularly U.S. President Donald Trump, signaled a reversal. On April 8–9, 2025, Trump announced plans for a “major” tariff on pharmaceutical imports, emphasizing a goal to incentivize drug manufacturing in the U.S. and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers like India and China. A 90-day tariff pause, granted on April 9, preserved access to the U.S. market for over 75 exempt countries, including India, while a steep 125% tariff on Chinese created an opportunity for Indian pharmaceuticals companies to capture additional U.S. market share.

Companies like Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, Aurobindo Pharma, Lupin, and Cipla, which derive 28–46% of their revenues from the U.S., could face 3–6% EPS erosion under a 10% tariff scenario, with smaller players being more vulnerable. While China remains a key supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), contributing 13–15% of those used in U.S. generics—including critical drugs like antibiotics and statins—its role in finished formulations is limited due to fewer FDA-approved facilities and a focus on raw materials. The 104% U.S. tariff on Chinese pharma imports has effectively priced most Chinese APIs out of the U.S. market, offering India a strategic advantage, as it may face a lower tariff range of 10–26%.

India, already supplying 20–25% of APIs consumed in the U.S., is well-positioned to step in, especially as it scales up domestic production under the $1.3 billion Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme covering 55 API projects. This shift benefits Indian firms like Divi’s Laboratories and Laurus Labs, which could see 10–15% annual revenue growth by replacing Chinese suppliers. The tariff disparity could also enable Indian players like Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, and Aurobindo Pharma to capture an additional $1–2 billion in U.S. market share, boosting revenues by 5–8% and margins by 1–3%, particularly for those with strong U.S. pipelines.

With over 600 FDA-approved facilities and increasing API self-reliance, India is well-placed to fill the gap left by China, strengthening its position in U.S. supply chains under the “China Plus One” strategy. However, challenges such as capacity constraints, a 30–35% reliance on Chinese APIs, and the risk of potential U.S. tariffs on Indian pharma could limit these gains, potentially leading to higher generic drug prices and margin pressures.


India’s auto and components sector faces mixed impacts. On one hand, higher tariffs on Chinese goods offer India a competitive edge in exports to the U.S. But existing Indian exports (~$6.8B in FY24) may still feel heat from indirect cost pressures.

Meanwhile, the “China Plus One” strategy is pushing global and some Chinese firms to shift base from China. India is a preferred option, but regulatory roadblocks have stalled major Chinese auto investments like BYD and Great Wall Motor.

India is countering this by pushing trade negotiations with the U.S. and expanding its PLI schemes to attract component manufacturing. This could position India as a rising alternative in global auto supply chains over the long term.


Global industrial giants like Apple are increasingly shifting manufacturing to India as part of the “China Plus One” strategy, driven by rising U.S.-China trade tensions and a push to diversify supply chains. Apple now produces over 14% of its iPhones in India through suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron, leveraging India’s PLI incentives and growing infrastructure. Other firms across electronics, aerospace, and automotive sectors—such as Samsung, Boeing, and Siemens—are also expanding their India footprint. While regulatory challenges remain, India is rapidly emerging as a key global manufacturing hub.


The recent 27% U.S. tariff on Indian textile and apparel imports poses short-term challenges by increasing costs and impacting order volumes, as buyers seek discounts to offset the higher landing costs. However, India is relatively better placed compared to competitors like Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China, which face even steeper tariffs. This opens a strategic opportunity for India to capture a larger share of U.S. sourcing. Domestically, the Indian government has imposed higher duties on cheap Chinese fabric imports while easing norms for technical textile machinery to support local manufacturing. Overall, while the tariff presents pricing pressure, India could emerge as a preferred sourcing hub if it navigates the global trade shifts effectively.


The 2025 reciprocal tariff regime has significantly altered global trade dynamics, with India facing a 26% effective tariff on its exports to the U.S. This has put considerable pressure on sectors like chemicals, seafood, textiles, auto components, and industrial goods. Companies with high U.S. exposure are witnessing margin compression, order deferrals, and increased competitive threats, particularly from countries with lower tariff burdens.

Despite the challenges, India is actively responding through diplomatic negotiations, market diversification, and strategic localization efforts by affected industries. While the short-term impact is disruptive, the long-term outlook depends on how effectively India recalibrates its trade strategy and how quickly exporters adapt to shifting global demand. If managed well, this disruption could pave the way for stronger, more diversified export pathways and greater resilience in India's trade ecosystem.
